OVERVIEW
About this project
The Karu Corridor upgrade widened an overloaded single carriageway into a dual carriageway across 7.2 kilometres, through terrain that ranged from rock cut to soft valley fill. The road carried thirty thousand vehicles a day throughout construction; traffic management was engineered with the same rigour as the pavement design.
Earthworks balanced cut and fill along the alignment to keep haulage off public roads. The pavement is a crushed-rock base under asphaltic concrete, designed for a twenty-year life under the corridor's measured axle loads rather than an assumed standard.
Three signalised junctions, continuous lined drainage, and solar street lighting completed the scope. The corridor opened in stages, junction by junction, and the final section was trafficked four months after the first.
